Tally Marks

This week in Math, we learned about tally marks.  We discovered that tally marks help us to count things faster, much like our five and ten frames that we use every day.  Using tally marks is also a quick way to organize information that we collect.

Ms. Arboe taught us a cute poem about tally marks called "Tally Mark Tim".  It has actions that go with it, so if you'd like to see it, be sure to ask your child!  The poem goes like this:

Doing actions to this poem really helped us to remember it, too!

Next we learned that when we use tally marks, we need to know how two make two different kinds of lines...vertical and diagonal.

Using this popsicle stick model really helped us.

Then we got to practice on our own.  We did a pretty good job, too!

We will be working more with tally marks in the next few days, too.
