Good Bye, Chicks!

Thursday was our last day with the chicks.  It was a little sad for us at the end of the day when it was time to tell them good bye.   Good thing we were able to spend lots of time with them on Thursday!  We observed them and then wrote about our observations in our Chick Journals, just like real scientists do.  We shared our writing with the class.

We also completed our Life Cycle of a Chicken project.  They turned out great!

Overall, we were able to hatch four chicks in the incubators and the Science Center delivered ten chicks  in addition to the four we hatched for us to observe for the week.  It is amazing how much new learning we have with this unit!

It is hard to believe we only have one more week together as Kindergartners!  It is going to be fun, but a little sad, too.

Minnesota Zoo Trip

We could not have asked for a more perfect day for our field trip to the Minnesota Zoo.  We had an absolutely wonderful time!

Thank You Chaperones!

A huge shout out to our amazing chaperones for our field trip to the Minnesota Zoo today!  Without your help, we would not have been able to have such a great time.  Thank you Chad King (Marin's dad), Kristen Mansch (Jake's mom), Jennifer Kemp (Brady's mom), Heather Moss (Isabella's mom), Derrick Zuleta (Marius' dad), Josie Hurka (Claire's mom), Cory Gould (Bowie's dad), Natalie Mzorinski (Brody's mom), Emily Hauenstein (Breckin's mom) and Maribel Osterhout (Nathaniel's mom).  In addition, a special thanks to Mrs. Jodi Radermacher and Mrs. Jennifer Ekstrand for their help as well.  We had a fabulous time!

Team Work Makes a Dream Work

The mural project is finished and it looks incredible.  One of our friends said it best.  On the way back from Art class on Tuesday, David saw Mrs. Town and he said "Mrs. Town!  This is kind of like doing our community writing projects in our classroom, only it is community Art!"  Thanks to everyone who made this possible!

Artist in Residency Program

This past week, we have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Casey Opstad.  Casey is a Muralist from New York City.  He is also Mrs. Trina Fifield's brother!  The Northview PTO has generously sponsored our "Artist in Residency" program and all of the students at Northview are participating in creating a mural in one of the hallways of our school!

It is pretty amazing how much work is involved in this project.  First, the space for the mural needed to be prepared for the painting.  Then we learned about mixing paint and creating different shades of paint.

We were each assigned a spot on the wall, so we had to write our names on it.  Yes, we got to write on the wall at school!

Next, the wall had to be taped into sections and them the most fun part so far…painting!

It took a while, but everyone got to paint their part.  This is what it looks like so far...

Isn't it beautiful?  Next week, there will be silhouettes of students added to it and a quote that the students voted on.  The quote will say Team Work Makes the Dream Work!

There are so many people to thank for this project.  Many thanks to the Northview PTO, Mrs. Town, Mrs. Hanson, Ms. Mathieson, Mrs. Fifield, Mr. Opstad, the many volunteers who assisted, classroom teachers and of course, our Northview All Stars.  We can't wait to see the completed project!

Fun with our Chicks

We are learning so much about baby checks and chickens.  We are also having lots of fun while we are learning about them, which is a bonus!

This is the chick that hatched in our classroom earlier this week.  Meet Peep!

On Thursday the Science Center delivered four more chicks for us to observe.  These chicks are already developing their wing feathers!

We sure are enjoying having these visitors in our classroom.

Our New Addition!

I wanted to send out a quick post to introduce you to our newest class member.  I am pleased to introduce you to our new chick, Peep.  Peep hatched sometime during lunch today (between 12:15 and 12:40).  As you might imagine, the kindergartners and their teacher are thrilled!

We waited and watched very patiently!

He worked pretty hard to get out of that shell.  When I left this evening, Peep was resting comfortably.  Tomorrow we will take Peep out of the incubator.  Peep will move in to a comfy box in our classroom. We did vote on Peep's name, which is how we came up with it.

A pretty exciting day in kindergarten!

Kindergarten: A Year in Review

What an amazing group of kids…or as we call them in Kindergarten, "Show Biz Kids".  They performed their program called "Kindergarten: A Year in Review" just beautifully on Thursday for the entire school and Friday for our families and friends.  Weren't they just great?  Thank you all so much for coming and supporting us.

Here are a few more photos of our STARS…

…and of course we took one with our silly faces!

If you were not able to attend, we will post the video of our school show either on the Northview webpage or this webpage early next week.  I will keep you posted!  Thanks again for your support!
