More Fun With Our Chicks

The kindergartners are loving having these chicks in our classroom.  They would love it if we spent the whole day just observing and playing with them.  We try to get them out a few times each day.  Here are some photos of our day with them on Thursday.  This was their first time holding chicks...if they wanted to.  Enjoy!

The kids are loving playing with them.  They are also good helpers when it comes time to put them back in their box!

Library Check Out

On Thursday afternoon, we got to visit the library to learn a new book check out procedure.  Up until now, the kindergartners would get to pick a book from the ones laid out on the tables in the library.  Well, since we will soon be first graders, we are learning how to check out books like one of the big kids.

Mrs. Galland met with us in the library and explained the new procedure so we could learn how to choose books from the shelves.  Our friend Svaransh helped model what to do.

Then we got to choose our book from the shelves, check it out and find a cozy spot to do some quiet reading!

Many thanks to Mrs. Galland and Mrs. Horton for teaching us this new procedure in the library.

Meet Our New Additions

When I arrived at school this morning, I heard the sound of peeping coming from the incubator.  I went to find a couple of friends who were at SAC before school to help me.

We discovered tow of our four eggs had hatched overnight!!  Everyone was so excited and couldn't wait to peek inside the incubator when they got to school.

Now we had some work to do.  The chicks can't stay in the incubator forever, so we needed to prepare a habitat for them while they are in our classroom.

Then we got on with our morning.  Here we were doing Guided Reading about the life cycle of chickens during our Managed Independent Learning time.

Then right before lunch, we received a special delivery of six more chicks from Fluegel's.  These chicks are a little older than the two that hatched overnight, and they are all yellow.  We will share these with all of the kindergarten classrooms.  We took ours out of the incubator and put them in the new habitat with the others.  It took them a while to get used to each other!

After specialists time, we decided it was time to be scientists and observe some chick behaviors.  We took them out of the box and watched closely.

We watched them eat.  We also noticed that they are pretty fast runners.  They peep really loud when they wander away from their flock of friends.  Then we had a chance to touch them.  They were very soft and fuzzy.

Then, right before I went home for the evening, I heard more peeping.  Guess what?

We had another egg hatch.  The chick was peeping really loud and then seemed to be resting when I left.  Hopefully it is ready to join the rest of the flock in the box habitat tomorrow morning.  We will also get to hold the chicks tomorrow...if we want to!  What a great day in kindergarten!!

Carnival Raffle Basket

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed in any way to our classroom carnival raffle basket.  It turned out really nice and I am so grateful for all the donations we received.  Special thanks to our clerk, Miss Becky, for helping out with the decorating, delivering and the list for this project.  As you can see by the itemized list, there are some nice things in this fire pit basket.  Whoever wins this basket will surely enjoy it.  Be sure to check this and all the classroom baskets out in the library during the school carnival this Friday evening.

Popcorn and Fun!

It was so beautiful on Friday afternoon, we decided to enjoy our popcorn from the Student Council Deep Portage fundraiser outdoors!  Everyone enjoyed a popcorn snack and some extra recess time on the playground.  Thanks to the Northview Student Council for coordinating this fun snack for us!

The popcorn was great and we had fun on the playground!
