One of our priorities the first week of school is learning the names of all our new friends. This can be a little tricky when we have twenty three community members. We are working on lots of name activities to help us with this. One activity is to create our class name chart. We start by writing names of our students on cards and spreading them out on the rug. Then we begin with the letter A. Anyone who has a name beginning with an "A" gets to find their card.
Next our friends with names beginning with A hold up their name cards and tell us their name.
As a community, we determine which names goes on the chart first. We learned that we need to look at the second letter of the name, and sometimes even the third letter. Then we add the names to the chart. We do this for each letter of the alphabet.
It took us a little while, but we did get it all finished. When it is done, we hang it up in our classroom and we use the name chart for many things throughout the entire school year.
