Wood and Water

On the 100th Day of School, we observed what would happen to wood if we put water on it.  In order for us to do this, we needed to learn how to use eye droppers properly.

Once we did this, we used the eye droppers to place some drops of water on two types of wood samples…red cedar and particleboard.  We watched closely to see what would happen.

Some of the wood samples absorbed the water.  Some repelled the water.  Then we wondered what would happen if we placed each of the samples of wood we have been observing in water.  We predicted they would sink because they seemed to be heavier than the water!

We were actually not correct.  All of the wood samples floated, at least initially.  We let the samples soak in the water to see what would happen.  By the end of the school day, the particle board and plywood samples were getting a bit lower in the water, but none of the samples had sunk.  We decided to leave them soaking in water overnight.  When we got to school the next day, only the particle board samples had sunk to the bottom of the water tubs.  We think the particleboard absorbed the most water and they got soggy and heavy, so that is why they sank.

  1. looks like kids enjoyed all this activity particle boards are not moisture resistance i think you could also use plywood and other materials like hdhmr to make it more fun
