Materials In Our World - Observing Wood Samples

These kindergarten scientists have been so busy over the past few weeks learning about Materials in Our World.  We have learned that materials are the things we make stuff out of.  Although there are lots and lots of materials in our world, we will be focusing on three types for the next few weeks…wood, paper and fabric.

We began the unit learning about wood.  We specifically observed five different types of wood…basswood, red cedar, pine, plywood and particle board.  We looked closely at each type of wood sample and talked about what we noticed.

We noticed many similarities and differences in the types of wood.  We learned that basswood comes from linden trees, pine comes from pine trees and red cedar comes from cedar trees.  We also learned that some types of wood, such as plywood and particle board, are man made.

Like all good scientists, we recorded our observations in our science journals and shared our writing with our classmates.
