These young scientists were at it again early last week trying to figure our how they could change the shape of wood. We talked about this and came up with a few ideas on how to change the shape of wood. Someone suggested we use a saw. Good idea, just not very safe for five and six year olds. Someone else suggested a hammer. Again, good idea, just not practical or safe. Then Mrs. Kurt handed out some small pieces of paper that were smooth on one side, but very bumpy and rough on the other side. It was sand paper…and you guessed it! We used this cool tool to change the shape of wood!
This seemed like it would be a good idea and fun to do. After all, how hard can it be to sand wood? We thought we could change the shape of our wood samples fast! And, with all these people sanding, we would be able to collect a LOT of sawdust…maybe enough to fill a bag.
Well, these scientists learned quickly that sanding wood by hand is hard work. And, even with 19 people sanding, we did not collect much sawdust. We did notice that we were able to change the shape of our wood samples, which was exciting. It was just a lot of work to accomplish it!
