Diwali

Today we had the honor of having two special guests in our classroom…Jayandhan Rajasundaram and Anitha Narayanasamy.  They are Yashika's parents and they were gracious enough to spend time with us teaching us about Diwali.  Diwali is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year and is celebrated with family gatherings, glittering clay lamps, fireworks, sharing of sweets, rangoli and worship.

We watched a short video on the story behind Diwali and saw many photographs and artifacts associated with this Festival of Lights.

We were able to examine many different diyas, which are small clay or metal lamps with a wick and oil.  These lamps represent the victory of good over evil and are placed around their homes.

It was fascinating to learn about the traditions of Yashika's family.  We are grateful to them for sharing with us.  Thank you, Jayandhan and Anitha!
