Gingerbread Houses

Friday afternoon was one of the most fun times this year in Kindergarten Plus.  We made our gingerbread houses!!  It was so much fun.  Everyone had a special guest attend to help.  We used milk cartons, graham crackers, frosting and all kinds of candy "decorations"!  Thanks to everyone who donated supplies, helped organize candy and came to spend time with their kindergartner.  It was a very  special afternoon!

I will send and post the other photos from my camera as soon as my daughter (and IT assistant) helps me download them!  :-)

D.E.A.R Time and Changing Wood

On Thursday afternoon, we did something new.  The whole school had D.E.A.R. time!  D.E.A.R. stands for "Drop Everything And Read".  Everyone in the whole school stopped what they were doing and read for fifteen minutes.  It was really cool.  Josh Alexander, a fifth grade Student Council member, came up with the idea and it looks like we are going to do this once a month.  We loved it!

On Friday morning, we did more in our Science unit on wood.  This lesson was on changing wood.  We learned about a pretty cool thing that woodworkers use...sandpaper.  Sandpaper can smooth out a piece of wood so you don't get splinters.  It can also change the shape of the wood.  We each had a wood sample and a piece of sand paper.  We discovered in a hurry that sanding can be hard work.  We collected our sawdust on paper plates and realized that although everyone was busy sanding, we did not collect much sawdust!!

Learning More About Wood

In Science, we continue to learn about wood.  On Monday at the end of the day, we put a piece of pine, basswood, red cedar, plywood and particle board in a basin of water to see if they would float or sink.  When we left on Monday, all five samples were floating.  When we came back to school on Tuesday, we observed that only one sample - the particle board - had sunk.  The other four were still floating!

So today, we decided to try and see how we could make a piece of pine and a piece of plywood sink.  We got a basin of water, the wood samples and decided to add some weight to the wood samples.  We used paper clips and rubber bands.  We started adding paper clips to the samples of wood to see how much weight we needed to sink the wood samples.  Guess what we discovered?

It took 24 paper clips to sink the sample of plywood and 18 paper clips to sink the piece of pine.  We had a lot of fun doing this investigation!

In Math, we learned about growing patterns.  A growing pattern is a pattern that increases or decreases by a constant difference.  We made ladybugs, each with two spots.  After we made the ladybugs, we put them together to create a growing pattern.  Isn't it cool?

We continue to add to our Science Notebooks.  Our questions was:  What is made of wood?  Just like in Writing Workshop, we thought about our idea, sketched it and wrote the words.

We had some pretty cool visitors for lunch today.  Our friend, Mr. Cow, came to see if we were drinking our milk.  (He is actually Mrs. Fleck's student teacher!)  Luckily, we were.  In fact, our class is one of the few classes that drinks all of their milk every day at lunch time!

Sam's mom came for lunch today, too.  We love having visitors for lunch.  If you ever want to join us, we go to lunch at 12:45.

A Snowy Day!

Finally...our first recess with snow!!  We have been waiting for this day for a long time and we were so excited.  I think the hardest part of our day was getting everything to fit inside our lockers.  It does all fit but it is going to take us some time to practice and get better at fitting all of our things in.

We also discovered that it took lots longer to get ready to head out for recess.  But once we did, it was worth it!

In Science, we worked on a new investigation called Wood and Water.  We learned more vocabulary words, such as 'communicate', 'absorb', 'bead', 'sink' and 'float'.  First we explored using an eye dropper and water.  It was fun.  Then we used the eye droppers to place water on samples of particleboard and red cedar.  We observed and noticed that the wood gets darker when it is wet.  We also noticed that the water was absorbed in the particleboard faster than the red cedar.

Next we tried adding water to the samples of plywood, pine and basswood.

We were curious to learn if our wood samples would sink or float.  We put one of each of the wood samples in a basin of water.  Initially, they all floated but we were still curious, so we decided to let them stay in the water overnight.  We made some predictions about what we think will happen.  We will check the basin in the morning to see so you will have to check the blog tomorrow to see what we discover!
