The Gingerbread Boy

Today was an exciting day in Kindergarten.  Ms. Kieltyka read us an awesome story called "The Gingerbread Boy" by Paul Galdone.  We learned that stories have characters and that characters can be people and they can be animals!  We made a list of all the characters in the story.

Now all this talk about gingerbread made us really hungry, so we decided to make our own class gingerbread boy.  Before you can start cooking, you need some instructions, or a recipe to follow.  The recipe also told us what ingredients we would need to make this.

Then we got to work.  We added the ingredients...

…and everyone helped to stir the batter.  Round and round, 1, 2, 3. A gingerbread boy I soon will be!

Next it was time to create the gingerbread boy.  We did the best we could!

We took our gingerbread boy to the kitchen because we don't have an oven in our classroom.  We asked Mrs. Hansen, one of the lunchroom ladies, really nicely, if she could please cook our gingerbread boy.  She said YES!  We also asked her to watch it closely because in the story, the gingerbread boy ran away.  We don't think that would really happen, but just in case!

We can't wait to have a special gingerbread treat tomorrow!

Welcome to Kindergarten at Northview!

We are off and running in Kindergarten!  We are so busy learning lots of new routines and rules about being in school, meeting new friends and our classroom community.  We have learned so much already but still have lots more to learn!

Breakfast and lunch routines have been a little tricky, but they are going very well.  We also managed to get some work in…we colored a certificate for the first day of school and we did some guided discovery with our connecting cubes.

Today we learned about our Morning Message.  Each day we have a message that consists of the date, a greeting, a message telling us what day it is and something we will be doing.  The message ends with "Make it a great day!" and a signature from Mrs. Kurt.  Here is a sample:

We have a big day planned for tomorrow.  Be sure to check out our blog to see what we are up to!

Welcome to the Class of 2027

Welcome to the Class of 2027!!

It has been so fun to meet my new class of kindergarten students and their families in the past couple of weeks.  Our assessment days, orientation meeting and open house were all a huge success!  Thanks for taking the time to come and meet our new Northview community.

I have already made a few changes in our classroom space.  I was able to get new tables after open house so with the help of Mr. Ball and Mr. Gibson (our custodians) and Mrs. Putz (first grade teacher), I was able to get our new space ready.  I love it and I think you will, too!

I hope you all have a safe, relaxing weekend.  I can't wait to get started on Tuesday morning.  See you soon!

Our Last Day of Kindergarten, 2014

Our last day of Kindergarten was a busy one!  We visited our Third Grade Buddies to watch their plays.  Then we went outside and we read to them.  They were pretty impressed at our reading skills.  When we finished reading, we all played together on the playground.

We all worked together cleaning up our room, cleaning out our lockers and getting our things packed to take home.  The highlight of the day was our All Star School Assembly that took place in the afternoon.  It was fun to have the whole school together.  We watched a video presentation, put together by some fifth grade students and Mrs. Fifield.  It showed things from the whole school year and we loved it!

Then it was time to go home, begin our summer adventures and get ready for First Grade!

It was an amazing year.  Thank you for sharing your incredible children with me this year.  We had quite a journey and I truly already miss them.  I wish each of you a happy, safe and relaxing summer.  Be sure to practice your reading, writing and math skills to prepare for your first grade assessments as well as first grade in general.  Have fun.  Play.  Discover.  Imagine.  Believe in yourself.  I do!  Have a great summer.

Winding Down

As our Kindergarten year draws to a close, here are a few photos from our day.  A couple of my friends  offered to help me teach today!

We celebrated Sophia's birthday.

We did some reading workshop, too.
