Wood and Water

We recently started learning about Materials in our World.  Our focus last week and this week is wood.  Last Wednesday, we investigated what would happen to wood if we added water to it.  Like all good scientists, we gathered our tools, including safety glasses, eye droppers, wood samples and containers of water and got to work.  We first had to learn how to use the eye droppers properly.  That was actually fun for us!

Next we got our wood samples.  Each student has a sample of cedar and particleboard.  We used the eye dropper to place several drops of water on the wood samples.  Next we had to observe (look closely) to see what happened.  This was when we needed to be very patient!

We discovered that the particle board absorbed the water faster than the cedar.  We also learned that when wood gets wet, it changes color.  We put a sample of each in water to see if it would sink.  Neither of the wood samples sank to the bottom so we let them sit over night.  The next day, the particleboard had absorbed so much water that it actually did sink to the bottom of the container while the cedar kept floating!

Next we did what all good scientists do...recorded our observations.  We have a focus question that we add to our journal after each investigation.  This question was what happens when wood gets wet?  Look at this great writing!

Well done, kindergarten scientists!
