Last Thursday, we were curious to see if any of our other wood samples would sink. This time we tried a sample of pine and plywood. Our hypothesis (guess or prediction) was yes, they would sink. We quickly discovered that we were wrong!
So now, as scientists we needed to figure out how to make the wood sink. We decided to add weight to the wood to make it sink. We used paperclips for the weight. We didn't think it would take very many so we added three paperclips to each sample of wood.
They still both floated. Then we added five more paperclips to each. They still floated! We kept adding and adding more paperclips. Finally, both samples sank to the bottom of the tub!
The sample of pine needed 18 paperclips to make it sink. The sample of plywood needed 15 paperclips to sink.
