Kindergarten Math This Week

In addition to working on two dimensional shapes and patterns, we are doing lots of things in Math.  We start each Math lesson with a Math Talk.  It may look like this one or it may be about different numbers.

We also spent time doing math workplaces.  These include hands on activities that reinforce math concepts we are working on, including counting forward, writing numbers. shapes and sorting.

   

   

   

   

Much like our Managed Independent Learning time in literacy, our workplaces help the kindergartners to build some stamina to work independently on tasks.  They are learning to work on their own as well as with a small group of peers.  This helps with portable solving, taking turns, sharing, etc.

Shoo Fly Pattern Quilt

In Math, we have been working hard on two dimensional shapes and discovering patterns...not just in Math but in every day life.  We recently used triangles and squared to create a paper shoo fly quilt.

   

   

   

After we put the triangles together to make the quilt blocks, we created our paper quilt.

   

   

   

When we finished the quilt, we talked about all the patterns we noticed.  There are horizontal, vertical and diagonal patterns.  It turned out great!

Fire Hats

We read several fire safety stories this week.  One of our favorites was Dot the Fire Dog by Lisa Desimini.  We made our own fire hats.  In order to do this, we needed to do a lot of cutting.  It was kind of tricky but we did our best!

Fire Fighter Visit

On Wednesday, October 10, we had a wonderful visit from some firefighters from the Eagan Fire Department.  They visited with us in the library and showed us all their gear.  Then we got to go outside and see a fire and rescue truck close up.  We loved seeing their gear and truck!  Thank you for your service, Eagan Fire Fighters!  We appreciate all you do to keep us safe in our community.
