Meet Our New Additions

When I arrived at school this morning, I heard the sound of peeping coming from the incubator.  I went to find a couple of friends who were at SAC before school to help me.

We discovered tow of our four eggs had hatched overnight!!  Everyone was so excited and couldn't wait to peek inside the incubator when they got to school.

Now we had some work to do.  The chicks can't stay in the incubator forever, so we needed to prepare a habitat for them while they are in our classroom.

Then we got on with our morning.  Here we were doing Guided Reading about the life cycle of chickens during our Managed Independent Learning time.

Then right before lunch, we received a special delivery of six more chicks from Fluegel's.  These chicks are a little older than the two that hatched overnight, and they are all yellow.  We will share these with all of the kindergarten classrooms.  We took ours out of the incubator and put them in the new habitat with the others.  It took them a while to get used to each other!

After specialists time, we decided it was time to be scientists and observe some chick behaviors.  We took them out of the box and watched closely.

We watched them eat.  We also noticed that they are pretty fast runners.  They peep really loud when they wander away from their flock of friends.  Then we had a chance to touch them.  They were very soft and fuzzy.

Then, right before I went home for the evening, I heard more peeping.  Guess what?

We had another egg hatch.  The chick was peeping really loud and then seemed to be resting when I left.  Hopefully it is ready to join the rest of the flock in the box habitat tomorrow morning.  We will also get to hold the chicks tomorrow...if we want to!  What a great day in kindergarten!!
