Love These Kids!

It has been such a busy time in Kindergarten.  We continue to wait for the arrival of our baby chicks, hopefully early next week.  We are also busy preparing and rehearsing for our first ever Kindergarten program at Northview.  These kids are working so hard and are so excited for their performances!

Sometimes, when we are done practicing, we just have to dance!

We are also busy preparing for our field day in Physical Education with Mr. Nelson.  We really love going to P.E. with him!

Did I mention we have more visitors in our classroom?  Our goldfish, guppies and pond snails arrived today.  Never a dull moment in Kindergarten!

Visitors from Head Start!

On Thursday May 7, we had the pleasure of hosting 4 and 5 year old students from the Head Start program in our classroom.  These students will be attending Kindergarten next year and they came to visit us to see what it is like in a Kindergarten classroom.  They came for Morning Meeting, Interactive Read Aloud, and Number Corner.  In addition, we completed a coloring sheet and a Math activity with them.  We sure hope they enjoy Kindergarten as much as we do!

We showed the Head Start students how we "Gather Area" and "Gather Perimeter" on the rug!

Frog Story Problems

Pretty proud of these Kindergarten mathematicians!  They planned, wrote and illustrated some amazing frog story problems.  They shared their story problems and even talked about what they learned during the process.

Love how hard they worked on this project.  Great job, Kindergartners!

New Arrival

By far, the most exciting part of this past week was the arrival of our eggs.  On Wednesday, we placed 8 eggs in our classroom incubator.  If all goes well, we should be hatching live chicks on or around May 20.  We need to keep the temperature set at 100 degrees, with the humidity level between 45 and 55%.  On May 17, we will take the eggs out of the egg turner and place them on the floor of the incubator.  In the mean time, we will be doing lots of research and learning so much about baby chicks and chickens.  Stay tuned!

We continue to learn more about H.A. and Margret Rey and their beloved character Curious George.  We have started a community writing project, which is a Curious George story.  It takes place at Northview and is going to be lots of fun to complete.

One of the highlights of our Managed Independent Learning time is Conferencing with the Teacher.  During this time, we get to do our Guided Reading.  We are really doing a great job and are learning how to read.  So exciting!

Another fun week in Kindergarten!

Earth Day

Wednesday April 22 was Earth Day!  Claire and I discovered that we had similar items for Sharing today…she brought her Curious George and I wore a Curious George shirt that I picked up while on my trip to Boston!

We spent some time outside with the rest of the Northview All Stars cleaning up our school grounds.  We were surprised to see how much trash we collected.  We also felt really good doing something to help clean up the earth on this special day.  We were even lucky enough to sing the song "The Earth is My Home" to the fourth graders!

In Writer's Workshop, we continue to be our best selves as writers.  We are working so hard on our writing and make sure to write for our readers!

As you know, our students did not have school on Friday but the teachers did!  So, while the students were home, I set up our classroom incubator.  It is that time of year…our eggs arrive early next week and then we will spend the next 21 days watching and waiting.  With any luck at all, we will have a successful chick hatch in about three weeks.  Stay tuned!

Have a great weekend!
