Bus Safety and the Gingerbread Boy

Today we learned about bus safety.  We watched a video in Library yesterday with Mrs. Hemsey and then this morning, we got to practice on a real school bus!

   

Ms. Arboe read us the story "The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School" by Laura Murray.

   

 Then it was time to head to the lunchroom to pick up our delicious snack for the day.  However, there was one small problem...the gingerbread boy we made for our snack wasn't there!

 

 So we went back to our classroom to make a plan.  We decided to make a sign telling others that our gingerbread boy was lost!

  

We decided to look around the school for him.  He wasn't in the bathrooms, lunchroom, or the office.  But we did find him in Mr. Ball's office!  Thanks to the third graders in Mrs. Watters' class for the great hints!

 We decorated our gingerbread boy with frosting, blueberries and raspberries.  Then we ate him for our snack...YUM!

   

We were so glad we found our gingerbread boy.  

Gingerbread Boy

We are having a great week so far.  Every day the routines seem to get a little easier to follow.  We are working really hard, and although we still have lots to learn about being Northview All Stars, Mrs. Kurt says we are doing a really good job!

We are reading books this week about the gingerbread man.  We are learning that there are many different versions to the same story.  So far, we have read two different versions of "The Gingerbread Boy"

   

All this reading about the gingerbread boy made us hungry for some gingerbread.  So, we decided to make some for our snack on Wednesday!  First we came up with a list of groceries that Mrs. Kurt needed to shop for...

then we found the recipe...

 last, we gathered all of the supplies together that we would need to cook!

We had such a good time working together to make our special snack.  Mrs. Kurt said she was glad we could help her since she is not a very good cook!

   

We added the powdered ingredients.

   

 We added the eggs.

   

The last thing we added was the water.  Then came the fun part that everyone got to help with...the mixing!

Round and round...1,2,3.  A gingerbread boy I soon will be!

   

We shaped the dough in to a gingerbread boy and then took it to the kitchen and asked the nice kitchen ladies to bake it.  They said it would take a long time to bake, so we will pick it up tomorrow, decorate it and eat it for our snack.  YUM!  We can't wait!!!

Guided Discovery with Scissors and Unifix Cubes

Wow!  We have had a busy week.  And today was the best day of Kindergarten Plus so far!!  We have learned the Northview All Star Code and can say it all by ourselves!

Be sure to check our Friday Folders for information about the All Star Code.  We need to sign a paper and return it to school next week!

It seems to be working well.  In fact, we have had a few students earn Shining Stars for their good behavior.  Mrs. Kurt says she hopes more kids earn them next week!

We did a guided discovery with scissors today.  Guided discovery means we learn how to use different tools in school safely.  We also learn how to properly clean up and store the tools we use.  We learned the correct way to hold a scissors.  We discussed that the ONLY thing we cut with a scissors is paper.  We practiced carrying a scissors in a safe manner, too.  

We also did a guided discovery with one of our Math tools this afternoon...unifix cubes.  We spent some time exploring things we could do with the cubes.  Boy, were we creative!  Just look at some of the things we did with the cubes:

   

   

Mrs. Kurt said it was a great day today...and it was!  Have a good weekend!

Kindergarten Routines and Rules

We have been really working hard the past three days on learning all of the new routines and rules for Kindergarten Plus at Northview!

When we get to school in the morning, we have two very important jobs to do.  First, we need to be sure we check our back packs to see if there is anything in them that we might need to give to Mrs. Kurt. 

Next, when we go in to the classroom, we go to our table spot and find our clip.  (The clip is really a clothespin with our name on it.)  Our job is to take it to the behavior chart and place it on the green "Ready To Learn" area because when we come to school, we are ready to learn!

One of our favorite times of the day is Snack and Milk time.  We are working hard on eating healthy snacks and drinking all of our milk!

Mrs. Kurt also gives us time to practice our lunch numbers for when we go to lunch...another favorite part of our day!

   

We are learning the names of all our new friends in Kindergarten Plus.  We do this by playing some fun name games during our Morning Meeting.

We learned a cool Math counting game called "ZAP" and we can't wait to play it again tomorrow.

After recess, we had a little bit of Quiet Time.  Mrs. Kurt was super excited because we all did a great job just coloring and relaxing before our busy afternoon started.  Such good listeners!!!

We had a visit with our school nurse, Mrs. Hannasch, this afternoon.  She showed us a great video and talked to us about allergies.  We learned that lots of people have allergies and that it is OK to have allergies!  She also reminded us that we should not share our food and that we need to be good helpers by washing our hands after we eat and  cleaning our table spots after snack.  We want all our friends to be happy and safe.

We are so busy learning new things that we are pretty tired at night.  Remember to get lots of rest...tomorrow will be another busy day!

Our First Day of Kindergarten

It was such an amazing day!  Thanks to all the parents who attended our Kindergarten Orientation meeting this morning.

We learned lots of new things today.  We learned how Kindergartners line up.  We learned how we use the bathrooms and wash our hands at school.  And, we learned how to put our lunch numbers in the system and how to stack the trays after we eat so they don't all crash to the ground.  We had our snacks and then we learned how to be safe on the playground.  And that was just the morning!!!

  

I think our favorite part of the day was lunch and recess!

After lunch, we read the story "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn.  It's about a little raccoon named Chester who did not want to go to school on his first day.  He actually felt sad in the story!  But then his mom gave him a kissing hand and he felt lots better.  Ask your child what the kissing hand is!  When we finished the story, we talked about how we felt on the first day of school...look at our responses!

   

We also got to visit the school library this afternoon and meet Mrs. Hemsey.

Then it was time for us to go home for the day.  We were all tired but Mrs. Kurt said we did a great job.  She told us to be sure and get a good night sleep because there is lots more for us to learn tomorrow!!

Welcome to the 2013-2014 School Year!

Well, we are back!  Ms. Arboe, my student teacher and I have been busy preparing our classroom and attending meetings.  We are getting so excited for our Open House this evening.  Check out how our classroom looks so far...
