Tasting Apples and Graphing Results

On Friday, we continued our exploration of apples.  Students that wanted to had the opportunity to taste a piece of a red, yellow and green apple.

Then we had to decide which type of apple we liked the best.  We decided to organize this information using a giant floor graph.  Each student chose a paper apple that matched the color of the favorite apple they tasted and placed it on the graph.

When we finished placing apples on the graph, we observed and analyzed our information.

We determined that four students liked the yellow apple best.  There was a tie...there were eight students that liked the red apple best and eight students that liked the green apple best.  It was a very cool way for us to see the results of our apple tasting activity.

Homemade Applesauce

What a great way to celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day...we made applesauce!  We got the recipe ready and all the supplies we needed.  Thanks to our kindergartners and their families, we had lots of apples to add to the pan!

A huge shout out to Mrs. Radermacher for facilitating the cooking.  Mrs. Kurt got to do all the clean up!

                         Before...                                                      After!

Next came the. best part...tasting.  I was super proud of my friends for giving the applesauce a try.  Some of us loved it and some not so much.  Either way, it was fun that we all worked together to make this yummy snack!

We Are Better Together!

We continue to work each day on building our classroom community.  This is a process that we will continue throughout the entire school year.  We know that each of us is a unique, special individual.  To illustrate this, each student was given a large puzzle piece.  On this puzzle piece, each student wrote their name and then drew things that are special about them.  In addition to being an individual, we are also each part of our classroom community.  To show this, we put all the smaller pieces of the puzzle together to make a classroom community puzzle and came up with the title We Are Better Together!  And we are!  :-)

Writer's Workshop: Letter Sort Part Two

When we reconvened during our Writer's Workshop time on Friday, we looked at what the small groups had sorted on Thursday.  We had to look at what the groups had done and then we had to agree or disagree with their decisions.  Once we were all; able to agree, we added the letters that we sorted to a class chart.

Writer's Workshop: Letter Sorts

We are very fortunate to have a co-teaching model in Writer's Workshop.  Because of this, Mrs. Kurt and Ms. Kieltyka have the opportunity to sometimes divide the students into small groups like we did this past Thursday.  While in the small groups, the students took time to sort lower case letters into three categories:  short, tall and basement letters.

Run, Run As Fast As You Can...

We recently finished up all of our gingerbread activities.  Mrs. Radermacher read us the story Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett.

We each made a page to add to our class book The Gingerbread Boy.  Watch for this book to be coming home.  Each family will get a chance to read our class book soon!  Next we decorated our very own gingerbread person.

They turned out so cute that we hand them up in the hallway for everyone to admire
